For South Africa, much will depend on Friday's opening match against Mexico, a team that has enjoyed an encouraging buildup, and the ensuing momentum that a win would generate. Should Mexico knock off the host nation, they have a solid chance to make the final 16.

Expectations are not high for South Africa when it comes to winning, but they must get out of their group, which includes Mexico and France.
"We have to do well, we need to get to the quarter-final", captain Aaron Mokoena stated.
South Africa is said to lack physical imposing players and endurance.
