Should the Uruguay team go on to win the 2010 World Cup, the payout would be among the biggest in sports history.  Uruguay entered the competition with long odds that would pay out US$10,000 for every US$100 bet.

Uruguay managed to beat Ghana to make the semi-finals for the first time in 40 years.  They won in dramatic fashion 4-2 with penalty kicks.  The final score for gamblers was a 1-1 draw.

An outright World Cup win would not be the first for Uruguay.  They won the first World Cup in 1930, then again in 1950, beating Brazil in Rio de Janeiro.

Uruguay, once a soccer power, most recently an afterthought, travels to Cape Town for Tuesday's semifinal. The last nation to make the tournament, it needed a playoff against Costa Rica just to get in (hence the long odds). Now it is one step from the title match.

"To be among the four best (teams) in the world, there are no words for that," star striker Diego Forlan said. "We felt we were going to faint with each penalty."
