Holland Commission Says Legalize Online Poker

A justice ministry commission in Holland on Tuesday issued an opinion that the country should follow France’s lead and open up its market to license a “small number” of online poker companies.

Last month, France began licensing offshore Internet poker ventures, effectively killing its long time monopoly on the sector.  The Netherlands current operates a similar monopolistic structure.  Still, officials rarely take action against the so-called “illegal” online gambling enterprises that take bets from Holland’s citizens.  France, on the other hand, had aggressively gone after such firms (i.e. bwin a few years back).

The commission suggests that the only way to stop such outside online poker sites from operating in the country, Holland Internet Service Providers would have to block the said websites

The commission was set up by caretaker justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin to look at the potential legalisation of online gambling.

In Julya court in The Hague ruled poker is a game of skill and that those participating in poker tournaments cannot be prosecuted.
