The Swedish online gambling firm Betsson has lost a legal battle with the government of Sweden related to its monopoly Svenska Spel.

In 1997, Sweden imposed a ban on nearly all land-based slot machines except those owned by Svenska Spel.

Betsson claimed that the Swedish government was in violation of European Union law by imposing such a ban and forcing it to close down operations in the country.

From Gaming Zion:

In its decision, The Stockholm District Court found the Swedish government guilty of violating EU law when it implemented the ban without notifying European Commission authorities. The court went on to state that Betsson could not receive damages because the ban was a result of procedural legal changes.

The company currently cannot offer its online sportsbook in Sweden.
