Few cities have been hit harder by the economic crisis than Atlantic City.  Things are so bad in the one-time prime gambling destination that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has promised a takeover of the town.  But Atlantic City is about to get a much-needed jolt from an upcoming HBO series, Boardwalk Empire.

The drama debuts at 9 pm EST and appears destined to become a hit thanks to the two men behind the series, "Sopranos" alum Terence Winter and Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese.

The show is based loosely on a non-fiction book "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City" by Nelson Johnson and centers around Atlantic City circa 1920 at the start of prohibition.

The show’s main protagonist is also a Sopranos alum, Steve Buscemi.
