DraftKings Pulls Some Paris Olympics Odds After Sharps Pound Them
The Olympics come around every four years. The U.S. Supreme Court abolished The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in May of 2018, thus ushering in the era of regulated sports betting in the United States. Thanks to the Covid pandemic, the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics became the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics.
A number of U.S. states still did not offer regulated sports betting back then and, as such, no Olympics wagering. In 2021, the likes of DraftKings and FanDuel were just getting their feet wet with this wagering option in only a handful of states. This will only be the second time the regulated sports betting apps are taking bets on the Summer Olympics. Note that these events are far more popular than anything offered during the Winter Olympics, another four year spectacle.
The wagering opportunities and amount of money expected to be bet on an event that fills an otherwise summer dead zone most years is staggering. In 2021, 97 million American adults were able to place a bet, compared with the 164 million American adults that will be able to wager on the Summer Olympics this year, according to the American Gaming Association.
In addition to the state regulated books, there are the long established international licensed online gambling companies that accept bets from most states, even those where regulation is not yet available (i.e. Texas, California, Idaho, Oklahoma, etc..) and those states that do not permit regulated sportsbooks from taking bets via mobile apps (i.e. Wisconsin, Washington, etc...). BetUS is one such company, and they are now celebrating more than 30 years in business. BetUS will be taking Summer Olympic bets from all states.
Oh, and while BetUS is considered a recreational sportsbook for the most part, much like practically every North American business with the rare exception of Circa, Pinnacle (Canada only) and Prime Sports, rarely will they drastically reduce one's limits or boot players. It's a policy that's become all too common with the U.S. regulated betting apps to the point where it's comical.
DraftKings serves as the perfect example of "you can't teach an old dog new tricks".
Justin Basch, with his nearly 10,000 followers, provided a great example via his Twitter account late Thursday as it pertains to DraftKings and the Summer Olympics.
RBY at +5000? Give me the max limits, @DraftKings https://t.co/suI7PlkBbv

"DraftKings released some more lines for the Olympics and quickly took down the 57kg line after Spencer Lee’s odds moved from +500 to +400 shortly after it was posted."
Just imagine what will happen once the events actually get underway (gulp!).
