Pennsylvania became the seventh state to officially offer betting on sports and the fourth state to offer sports betting online. What About Casinos?

 

Thanks to state legislation, Pennsylvania has been offering casino games via land-based casino venues since July 2004. However, only 12 of those are in operation. A bitter legal battle got underway a year after legislation was passed in 2004 and despite attempts from opponents to block casino gambling, residents of Pennsylvania could carry on placing bets as normal. In 2007, the state council passed a resolution that would allow the city to have a voice in the placement of casinos. And the voices were heard when the potential location for two casinos in the state were revealed, with residents expressing their anger at the plans.

 

The city attorney understood that the state law allowed for such comments from residents, however, the state filed a lawsuit and the casinos were built as planned. Licenses were granted in 2006 to racetrack holders, permitting them to operate slot machines too and on December 20th 2006, five standalone casinos were also granted permanent gambling licenses from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

On 20th October 2017, Governor Tom Wolf signed HB 271 and as a result, online casino and online poker was made legal in the State. In May of 2018, the Supreme Court ruled that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was unconstitutional, which then triggered a clause in Pennsylvania’s gambling bill, and resulted in sports betting being made legal too.
