A touchback, according to Wikipedia, is defined as a ruling that is made and signaled by an official when the ball becomes dead on or behind a team's own goal line (i.e., in their end zone) and the opposing team gave the ball the momentum, or impetus, to travel over or across the goal line but did not have possession of the ball when it became dead.

During the 2023-24 season, the Kansas City Chiefs were in the top 10 for the NFL's highest rate of kickoffs for touchbacks.

During the 2023 NFL season, 73% of kickoffs resulted in a touchback.  This high percentage occurred following an NFL rule change to allow all fair catches to bring the ball up to the 25-yard line.

And what a difference the rule change made.  60% of kickoffs resulted in a touchback in 2022, and just 48.8% of kickoffs resulted in touchbacks ten years prior to that (2013).

Only one Super Bowl kickoff has been returned for a touchdown.
