The $100 Million Poker Tournament in Macau: Wow!
Reports emerged Thursday of possible plans to launch an unprecedented $100 million poker tournament in Macau. Should the plans come to fruition, this would be the richest poker tournament by a long shot.
Gaming Today quoted casino operator representatives in Macau as planning the tentatively titled Macau Pro Am Open for the spring of 2013. Organizers look to create a prize pool of $100 million, with $25 million going to the winner. That amount would be more than two times that of the biggest 1st place cashout of just over $12 million awarded at the World Series of Poker in 2006.
“This spectacular event will establish Macau as the poker tournament capital of the world,” said William Murray, an American businessman representing one of the companies interested in sponsoring the event. “Macau is already the baccarat capital of the world, and now we are completing the other half of the puzzle, poker.”
The goal would be to attract some 500 players, most of whom reside in Asia.
But previous high roller tournaments have attracted a much smaller field. For instance, a $25,000 high roller tournament held as part of the Aussie Millions event drew a mere 20 participants while a $100,000 tournament at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure attracted only 38 entries.
