The Brits love to gamble and this is evident in the dramatic increase in online gambling activity over the past year with a rise of 40 percent.

A study conducted by the Nielsen Group reveals that an additional 3.2 million people logged onto Internet gambling websites during the last year compared to 2.2 million who accessed social media websites such as Facebook and its rivals.

Online poker sites were among the most successful, with PartyPoker registering an additional 870,000 visitors last year, up 174 percent.

The study also found that nearly half the gamblers earned more than £30,000 ($49,717).

Women comprised more than 46 percent of the online gambling community.  One demographic that might be suffering is the over-65 group.

"The over-65s and those on lower household incomes have historically been heavy users of gambling sites, but in the face of the recession this profile is changing," said Neil Beston, of Nielsen.

"While the phenomenal growth in gambling sites over the last two years has been driven by men and women of all ages, it appears to be powered particularly by middle-aged men, the well-educated and high-earning households."
