Kid Poker Gears Up for 2010 WSOP Run
Ever since the poker boom, few players have enjoyed the popularity and live tournament success as Daniel Negreanu. His sense of humor and personality have made him a natural fit in front of the television cameras. He has appeared on numerous poker shows including staples such as ESPN's WSOP coverage, High Stakes Poker, and Poker After Dark. However, it seems that his inability to win at the World Series of Poker in recent times is starting to get under his skin. With growing fields and more and more skilled competition, the road to bracelets just keeps getting tougher and tougher.
It seems however, that Negreanu is refocusing his efforts for this year to recapture some of his past glory. On his blog at Full Contact Poker, Negreanu has already outlined his plans for this year's 2010 WSOP tournament series, giving an outline of what he believes his schedule will be. Of this year's World Series, which is less than 3 months away, he says,
"This schedule is a rough draft and can never be entirely accurate since I don't know which events I'll be doing well in... the big buy in championship events start at 5:00pm, [so] it's safe to block out the next day for the same event as it's unlikely I'll bust in the first 8 hours."
It would seem that his primary focuses will be on the larger events but he will not rule out many of the smaller ones. Either way, he seems to be ready for a full workload as he is setting out to play in 36 of the 57 scheduled tournaments. It would seem that he believes that sheer volume is his best chance to win more bracelets, rather than narrowing his focus on less events and more quality.
Specifically, Negreanu listed the following tournament breakdown on his blog:
No Limit Hold'em: 10
Mixed Events: 6
Omaha Eight or Better: 4
Limit Hold'em: 4
Pot Limit Omaha: 3
2-7 Lowball: 3
Seven Card Stud: 2
Seven Card Stud Eight or Better: 2
Pot Limit Hold'em: 1
Razz: 1
To prepare to take on the world's best players, Negreanu has recently been spotted playing some large cash games on PokerStars, single tabling $100-$200 no limit hold em. Unlike his contemporaries, Negreanu prefers to play a single table at a time, choosing to develop strong in game strategies versus multi-table ROI. At press time, he was doing quite well at the game, though no statistics are yet available.
His success at this year's signature tournament series would seem so be good for the game as he remains one of the premier poker ambassadors.
