Phil Ivey Involved in a $5 Million Prop Bet
Phil Ivey is at it again. The player regarded by many as the world's premier poker player is gearing up for another run at the 2010 World Series of Poker. Last time around, Ivey had a series for the ages, snatching up two more bracelets and nearly winning the crown jewel of them all, the Main Event. In making the final table, Ivey proved that he is truly one of the all-time greats.
Ivey's penchant for side action comes as no surprise to anyone as he reportedly made 10 million at last year's series. It has been reported on Pokerlistings.com that Ivey has made his first prop bet of the 2010 series. It's actually a two-year bet which could conceivably be settled in year 1. Ivey has reportedly wagered $5 million that over the course of the 2010 and 2011 World Series of Poker tournaments, he will capture at least two bracelets. At first glance, this appears to be a foolhardy bet for someone to take. After all, as mentioned before, Ivey just accomplished this very feat during last year's series. However, someone has agreed to take him on the bet. The person is a bit of a surprise, fellow poker pro, Howard Lederer.
When news of the prop bet first broke yesterday, it sent scores of posters over to the forums at twoplustwo.com with many wondering just what Lederer could be thinking as many believe given Ivey's skill level and command of so many poker forms. Indeed, it seems that Ivey would be a virtual lock to win the bracelets and walk away with an extra $5 million.
