Poker Club Becomes the Poker Bomb

The first poker-themed movie of 2009 is called "The Poker Club."

Most movies about poker are bombs, and this one is likely no exception.

All you need to know about the film to surmise that is to look at how the movie is to be released.

The film, produced by Sony, is to be released direct-to-video.

That means the movie will not be shown in movie theaters.

Instead, it will be released immediately on DVD and made available for purchase for home viewing.

Generally, when a motion picture bypasses movie theaters and goes directly to DVD release, it means the producers of the film don't think the film will sell many tickets in theaters.

The reason, of course, that producers would think a film wouldn't sell tickets is because said producers think the film is lousy.

Simple as that.

For the record, "The Poker Club," coming to a Walmart bin near you, stars Jonathan Schaech, Johnny Messner, Loren Dean and Lori Heuring.

Who? Maybe the serious lack of star power in the flick has something to do with its ineptitude.

Or maybe it's the plot (or so-called plot, if you will).

According to Sony-issued press propaganda for the film, here's the plot: "For years, Aaron Tyler has been getting together with his three best friends Monday nights to play poker. But tonight, everything is about to change forever when the men accidentally kill a burglar who's broken into Aaron's house. Fearing the consequences, Aaron and his friends dispose of the corpse and agree to take the secret to their graves. However, they soon discover someone knows what they've done and is now playing a murderous game of revenge with them in this horrifying thriller."

So they hide the burglar's dead body because they are afraid of the consequences of killing him?

What consequences?

In every state in the USA, a homeowner is legally allowed to use deady force-that means killing somebody-against the perpetrator of a home invasion.

It's informally called the "King of the Castle" law and basically means if someone breaks into your home, whether he's armed or not, whether he's done anything yet or not, the homeowner has the legal right to, if you will, shoot first and ask questions later, if he thinks his life may be in danger.

"The Poker Club" comes out on DVD on April 21, 2009.
