Poker Pros Phil Ivey and Ziigmund Up in 2010
Even the greatest poker players in the world can have a rough night. Back in the beginning of 2009, Phil Ivey got off to a less than stellar start online at Full Tilt Poker posting a losing quarter during the 1st 3 months of the year. However, he quickly recovered and posted some of the highest win totals on the year, doing so playing far less than his rivals. If he is going to match last year's success, he will need to do the same as he finds himself in a quick hole, most of which is attributed to over $300,000 in a losing session against Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies.
Notable is the fact that this losing session is one of the few sessions Ivey has booked thus far in the month old year, as he has still not reached 1,000 hands played. By comparison, other fellow pros have played over 30,000 hands thus far.
It should be noted that even though he lost so much heads up to Ziigmund, Ivey is far from being in a hole. In fact, the loss means he is just above break-even, showing a profit of $32,000. On the other side of the coin, Ziigmund is enjoying much success in the first 30 days of 2010, posting a profit of $1.7 million, or roughly the same amount Isildur1 can win or lose in a half hour.
Times are not as peachy for another online great, Patrik Antonius, who owns the dubious distinction of being the first player to be down a million on the young year. Considering the fact that Antonius won the weekend's largest pot of a half million dollars, things could have been much worse.
Keep in mind though that variance is a part of the game and as 2009 showed, the poker year is a marathon and not a sprint.
Poker Pro's Profit so far in 2010:
Phil Ivey: + $32,000
Ziigmund: + $1.7 Million
