Shulmans are Third Married Couple to Win World Series of Poker Bracelets
Much was made this week about the news that Allyn Shulman, wife of Card Player magazine owner Barry Shulman, had won a World Series of Poker (WSOP) championship gold bracelet.
It wasn't that the win, in WSOP Event #29, a no-limit Texas hold 'em seniors tournament open to those age 50 and over, was that spectacular--it wasn't.
What made the victory special was that Allyn and Barry have now both won WSOP bracelets!
They are not, however, the first married couple to have each won a WSOP bracelet.
In fact, they aren't even the second couple to accomplish that feat.
Believe it or not, they are actually the third married couple to have each won a tournament at the WSOP and earned a bracelet.
Allyn took home $603,713 when she earned her bracelet this week.
Her win gives the Shulman family a combined three bracelets, as Barry won a stud tourney (earning $123,820) at the 2001 WSOP and won the Main Event (earning $1,305,542) at the 2009 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE).
Fifteen years earlier, the Sterns--Max and Maria--both earned gold at the 1997 WSOP.
Max had won his first WSOP bracelet in 1995, when he won an Omaha tournament and earned $140,400.
Two years later, he won two more bracelets, one in a no-limit Texas hold 'em tourney (earning $237,615) and another in a stud tournament (earning $117,000).
Also in '97 his wife, Maria, won her first WSOP bracelet, finishing first in a stud tournament and earning $140,708
It was the first time in WSOP history that a married couple had each garnered championship gold.
It would happen again just three years later, but after a 15-year wait.
In 1985, Harry Thomas won a WSOP stud tournament and earned $122,500.
Then, in 2000, his wife, Jerri, won a WSOP stud tourney, earning $135,825.
They would become the second married couple to each earn a WSOP bracelet.
So the Shulmans are the third such couple, but never fear, they've got another record to shoot for.
Their son, Jeff, is also an accomplished poker player, who's made the final table of a WSOP event but so far hasn't won a coveted WSOP bracelet.
If and when he does, the Shulman family will become the first family to have three different family members each win a WSOP bracelet.
Doyle Brunson, eat your heart out!
