You knew a betting market was going to follow after U.S. president-elect Donald Trump promised to rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America".

18 percent of those betting at Polymarket believe this one will happen.  That's more than double the number who are betting Trump will acquire Greenland.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory,” he said during a press release Tuesday that went beyond the hour mark. “The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name.”

During that same press conference Trump did not rule out military intervention to take control of Greenland and the Panama Canal, stated there would be "hell to pay" if the Israeli hostages are not released by the time he assumes office, and assured he would not use military force to annex Canada.

The Gulf of Mexico, as it was named as far back as the 16th century by Spaniards, is a semi-enclosed sea in the southeastern corner of North America. Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida all have coastline with the body of water.

Trump disparaged Mexico during the press conference.

“Mexico is really in trouble, a lot of trouble, very dangerous place,” he said, claiming the nation is controlled by drug cartels.

“The drugs that are coming through are at record numbers, record numbers,” Trump claimed, without citing evidence. “So we’re going to make up for that by putting tariffs on Mexico and Canada.”

This market will resolve to "Yes" if Donald Trump issues any executive order, or signs any bill into law, or otherwise officially renames the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" by December 31, 2025, at 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No."

If the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) renames the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" this will qualify for a "Yes" resolution.

This market's resolution source will be official information from the Trump administration or the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, however a consensus of credible reporting stating that the US Government has renamed it to Gulf of America will suffice.
