U.S. Government Shutdown Betting Market is Really Hot Right Now

While the first ever College Football Playoffs are set to get underway, it's actually the U.S. government shutdown betting market that is getting a large chunk of the gambling public's attention this week.

"Interest in this market has resulted in consistent traffic at the Gambling911 website," remarked Gambling911 Senior Editor, Payton O'Brien. "People are obviously paying attention based on traffic numbers."

This interest comes as House Speaker Mike Johnson's proposed government funding deal was abandoned on Wednesday following opposition from President-elect Donald Trump.

The bill, had it gained approval in both the House and Senate, aimed to prevent a government shutdown as the current funding deadline approaches Friday at midnight.

NCAA President Urges for Federal Regulations on Sports Gambling

The president of the NCAA appeared on Capitol Hill Tuesday to express support for some federal regulations around sports gambling — including a ban on a wager known as "prop bets" in college sports.

On Tuesday, appearing on Capitol Hill, the president of the NCAA called for an outright ban on these types of performance prop bets.

In the six years since the U.S. Supreme Court paved the way for legal sports gambling across the U.S., harassment and abuse directed at student-athletes has grown, said Charlie Baker, speaking to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"We believe that when bettors can't gamble on college athletes' individual performances, they're far less likely to attempt to scrutinize, coerce or harass student-athletes," Baker said.

"They get demands for money from unhappy bettors for trivial things that don't impact the result on the field," Baker said. "Many have received death threats from bettors, and they also receive other, in-person threats and accusations directed at them while they're leaving or coming onto the field of play."

"We understand sports betting is here to stay," said NCAA president Charlie Baker.

Baker was one of several witnesses to testify.

"If you are a 12-year-old child, you don't know sports without it being attached to gambling," said Dr. Harry Levant, a gambling therapist.

"We are in a sports betting boom," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut. "That is one of the most severe public health problems today."

Curacao Adapts New Gambling Regulations

Cucacao has adopted new regulatory policy as it applies to the gambling sector.

The Caribbean nation is among the largest and oldest serving online gambling firms across the globe.

The primary goal of the new legislation is to replace the outdated two-tiered licensing system, which allowed sub-licensing practices under four master license holders, with a more centralized regulatory framework. Under the new system, a revamped gaming authority will directly oversee online gambling licenses, ensuring greater accountability and oversight.

The new law was passed 12-6 by the majority in parliament.
