The Huskers enter this season with hopes of redemption after last year ended on a sour note as NU was handed 2 ugly losses to end a 10 win season. The Huskers would like to forget the Big 10 Championship against Wisconsin as the final tally was an ugly 70-31 score where the once feared Blackshirts of the Huskers defense were shredded and then Georgia piled on 45 points in the bowl game loss for some salt in the wound.
Nebraska is loaded on offense led by all world QB Taylor Martinez who stepped up his passing skills last season and is the biggest game breaking threat in the Big 10 at QB this year, perhaps in the nation. Rex Burkhead is in the NFL now, but NU is deep and talented at RB, not to mention experienced with Ameer Abdullah having over 1100 yards last season backing up an often injured Burkhead and NU has 3 capable backups with playing time, all with blazing speed behind a veteran and good offensive line with All American talent at left tackle in Sirles, and also at right guard with Jake Long is all conference.
The WR unit is deep and talented as well led by Kenny Bell who is Martinez's favorite target along with speedsters Turner and Enunwa and word is at Huskers camp is the coaches are doing cartwheels over freshman WR Alonzo Moore and also Jordan Westerkamp who both have impressed and will see time this season. Nebraska scored 34 ppg last year and I see that increasing to near 40 this year.
Many undervalue the defense NU will put on the field this season but with some JUCO talent to make an impact, especially at LB and DE, I think Bo Pellini may finally be able to prove his prowess as a defensive minded coach. Depth is an issue if the injury bug hits, but rest assured this defense will evolve and be better in 2013. Nebraska's secondary is talented and experienced and are tough against the pass and the strength of the defense. teams who throw it will find limited success and if the Blackshirts can evolve on run D, this unit will be better than advertised.
Losing kicker and punter combination star Brett Maher is a big hit and Mauro Bondi steps in to the kicking duties as a sophomore, word is experience is an issue but has a strong leg. The Huskers are notorious for good kickers and have 3 ex players in the NFL right now, so I see and upside here down the road this season. The return game on special teams for NU is excellent and all components are in place with Kenny Bell and a bevy of speedsters awaiting opposing tacklers. Nebraska breaks allot of big plays in the return game, I see that continuing.
Bo Pellini has lost 4 games per year in his 5 years as coach. Nebraska should open the season 7-0 with their toughest non conference foe UCLA playing in Lincoln as NU avenges an OT loss to the Bruins last year and have had that one circled since. Games at Michigan and Penn State in November loom large, and that Michigan game will be for the Legends Division crown unless someone comes out of nowhere to challenge. The Huskers close at home against Iowa. Northwestern and Michigan St are both in Lincoln this year and NU beat them both in 2012 in OT games.
If the Husker offense scores like they should until the defense gels, NU can flat out put people away this season on the scoreboard, and I say they win the Big 10 Legends Division and play Ohio State in the title game and compete well this time around.
I see Nebraska as a 1 or 2 loss team depending on wether they play in the title game or not and also see them winning in a big time bowl game with this high octane offense and a Top 10 ranking or better in 2013. This is my surprise team this season along with Baylor who I love over 8.5 wins with them. This should be Bo Pellini's best year. I like them over the win total and to regain some respect this season as a major power on the national scene. This offense is must see TV in 2013.
