The line on this game was a flat -3.5 across the board with approximately 75 percent of the betting action coming in on New Orleans, making this an all-important matchup for bookmakers to side with Carolina.
Simmons sees good reason why the Panthers can cover here, though he is more inclined to believe New Orleans will ultimately get the job done.
"The Panthers have allowed a league-low 13.1 points per game this season, and the 289.8 yards they have given up per game is second-best in the NFL. The defensive line has been absolutely dominant at times, and that has allowed the group as a whole to thrive. For as much pressure as the Carolina defense tries to get on Drew Brees this weekend, there is still a different kind of pressure on Cam Newton to step up in hostile territory and do enough to secure the win.
"Few would have projected these two contests between New Orleans and Carolina to determine which teams wins the NFC South, but both teams are right there fighting for the division and one of the top two seeds in the conference. The Panthers have played some excellent football, but the Saints have yet to lose back-to-back games and are still perfect at home, so it makes sense to roll with Brees and Who Dat nation."
