The Toyota/Save Mart 350 is one of two road-courses races on the Sprint Cup schedule and it was first run at Sonoma Raceway in 1989. It was a 300-km race until it was increased to 350 km in 1998, and drivers have 100 laps to get around Sonoma, which is 3.2 km (1.99 miles) long with 10 turns for the Sprint Cup drivers. It starts to a left at Turn 1 and then an uphill climb to Turn 2, where there is a right followed by a left-right at Turn 3 and 3a. There is a right-hander at Turn 4 and then a short straight to Turn 5, and a tight hairpin at Turn 6 where things tend to get crowded. Then you have the esses from Turn 7, 8 and 9 where drivers can get speed, but they have to slow down going into the hairpin at Turn 10, which takes them to the start/finish line.
2016 Prediction
Tony Stewart has an average of 12.4 in 17 races here, which ties him with Jimmie Johnson, and both are behind Clint Bowyer. Stewart finished 12th last year in one of his best races of the season, and if he is going to win anywhere in his final season as a Sprint Cup driver, it will be here or Watkins Glen. Take Stewart, who you should be able to get decent odds on. In terms of recent historical trends, unfortunately we don’t have much to go off over the last five years. Five different drivers have won the race in each of the last five years. In terms of the teams, Michael Waltrip Racing has delivered twice in the last five years while three other teams have won the race in the other three editions.
