Current world champion Gabriel Medina will look to begin the new season with a win in the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast that begins on Saturday, February 28th in Australia. A total of 34 surfers will be competing to win the first event on the 2015 World Championship Tour. Medina won this event last season as he kicked off the year in style while Kelly Slater won the event two years ago. Medina and Slater are the top two choices to win the 2015 Quiksilver Pro.
Here is a look at the event including Round 1 heats.
Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast
The list of winners in this season opening event in the past decade is small as three surfers have dominated at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast, Australia. Kelly Slater has won this event four times in the last decade while Taj Burrow and Mick Fanning have also won twice. The other two winners in the last ten years were Joel Parkinson in 2009 and Medina last year. The 2015 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast begins on February 28th and runs through March 11th.
Medina and Slater
The two favorites to win in Australia are the last two winners, Medina and Slater. Medina will face rookie Wiggolly Dantas and a wild card in Round 1 while Slater goes against Fred Patacchia and CJ Hobgood. Both surfers will have to contend with John John Florence who won in the Volcom Pipe Pro.
