This is one of five ATP events held in Germany. It is held in Munich and has a history that goes all the way back to 1900 when the International Tennis Championships of Bavaria were held. The first BMW Open was held in Munich in 1974. Local fan favorites have done well in this event winning six times including Philipp Kohlschreiber who won in 2007 and in 2012 while Tommy Haas won in 2013. Last year it was Andy Murray winning this event as he won his first clay court title in Munich. He defeated Mischa Zverev, Lukas Rosol and Roberto Bautista Agut before he beat Kohlschreiber in a great final. Murray will not be defending his title but Juan Martin del Potro will be making a comeback from injury and could be a threat. Thiem, Monfils, Goffin and Kohlschreiber will be looking to thwart del Potro in Germany.
Top Contenders
The top two choices to win in Germany are Thiem who has already won in Buenos Aires and Acapulco this season and Monfils who finished second in Monte Carlo. Two other players who might get into the mix are David Goffin and Juan Martin del Potro and not to be forgotten is Philipp Kohlschreiber who has won this event twice.
Juan Martin del Potro Returning
The first event on clay for del Potro since 2013 will be the BMW Open in Germany. He will be playing in Munich and then in Madrid as he preps for the French Open. "I am really happy to tell you that Munich and Madrid will be my first two clay tournaments after a long time," Del Potro said on his Facebook page. "I've been practicing on clay for a week now after years of not playing on this surface and I will keep getting better in the next few days. Rehab on my wrist is going as planned. Although I must be patient I am thrilled to be able to confirm two tournaments in a row, the first time I do this since I came back to tennis."
