On the card for UFC’s first match in Sweden, two middleweights will take the Octagon as Brian Stann faces Alessio Sakara, who has not competed in over a year.

Stann enters this match as an extremely heavy favorite. The American is coming off a loss, but against one of the best in Chael Sonnen, arguably the top fighter in the class. He fought Sonnen pretty well until falling via armbar submission late in the second round. Two of his career losses have come as submissions, and Sakara has not won that way since 2002. Prior to the Sonnen loss, Stann won three in a row against quality UFC opponents, including Chris Leben. Sakara is relatively new to the middleweight division, but has only gone 3-2 in his time since the switch. One of those defeats was a first-round domination at the hands of Leben, who KO’ed him without a problem.

Stann, nicknamed the “All-American,” brings great strength to any fight. Striking is the core of his game, making up 68% of his attack. This has meant eight of his 11 career wins have come as knockouts. This bodes well against Sakara who has lost via KO in three of his past four defeats. Stann should be able to control the style and pace of this fight with his expert striking.

Like Stann, Sakara is coming off a loss, but unlike his foe it is coming against a middling opponent, Chris Weidman. That battle came in March of last year though, so this represents more than a one year’s break from UFC for Sakara. Coming back in and fighting somebody such as Stann is an aggressive matchup for him, something that may not bode well. Beyond yielding an inch to Stann, Sakara should be rusty off this break. He tries to play a striking game too, with nine knockouts in 15 career wins, but he just is not as effective as Stann with his strikes.
