Canadians Will Spend Over $200 Million Betting the NHL Playoffs
Canadians are set to begin spending more than $200 million betting on this year’s NHL Playoffs, according to the Toronto Star.
This information was released by the Responsible Gaming Council (RGC). That That survey reveals 18 per cent of the adult population in Canada plans to place bets, this despite six of the seven Canadian NHL teams being out of the playoffs. Only Montreal remains and they have odds of 20/1 to win this year’s Stanley Cup Championship.
The survey was conducted between March 3-7 for RGC and sampled 1,012 Canadians. It also noted that Canadians bet more on Hockey than on the NFL this season (12% vs. 9%).
The most popular demographic for betting on hockey is the 18-34 age bracket, which the survey says shows 27 per cent of that age group planning to bet on the NHL playoffs.
“Research has consistently shown not only that sports betters tend to be younger, but also that young adults have the highest risk of developing gambling problems,” said Jon Kelly, CEO of RGC.
