The Cincinnati Bengals 2008 odds are hampered somewhat by odds makers opinion that the team will win UNDER 7 ½ regular season games in 2008. The good folks at SBG Global - a leading industry online gambling site with the best bonuses in the business - have posted a line of -130 on the Bengals winning UNDER 7 ½ games and even odds on going over that number. That's not good.

The Cincinnati Bengals would pay out $400 for every $100 bet if they were to win the 2008 NFC North Division. The Bengals odds to win the 2009 Super Bowl were +3600 for a payout of $3600 on every $100 bet at SBG Global

The one bright spot - or constant as AOL Fan House notes - it's the quarterback position and Carson Palmer.

"If there is one constant on this team, it is Carson Palmer. Sure, Palmer didn't have his best season a year ago, but his off seasons are better than many QBs best years. In reality, other things factored into his poor season (injuries to the line, injury to Rudi Johnson, receivers pouting). The only issue here is what happens in Cincinnati if Palmer gets hurt. They have no one groomed to come in. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jeff Rowe are in their second seasons with the team and Carson's brother, Jordan, is fighting for a spot."

There remains the issue of defense, as Andy Benoit points out:

Cincy has invested in their defense--the investments just haven't paid dividends.

The Bengals have spent two of their first three draft picks on a defensive player each year since 2004. Last season they nabbed Leon Hall in Round One and Marvin White in Round Four. The jury is still out on them, though both are starting. In 2006, Cincy selected Jonathan Joseph in the first round and Frostee Rucker in the third. Joseph looks good, Rucker is a bust (his work ethic stinks). The good news is the Bengals used the pick after Rucker to draft Domata Peko.

In 2005, David Pollack was selected 17th overall. His career was sadly ended by a neck injury. Odell Thurman was taken in the second round that year. His career was ended by substance abuse. In 2004, defensive backs Keiwan Ratliff and Madieu Williams were chosen in Round Two. Both played well, but both have left the organization.

The Bengals are trying on defense--they're just not succeeding.
