The Masters is the opening Grand Slam event on the calendar in golf, and due to the history around Augusta National Golf Club, it is the tournament many sports bettors look forward to most in the sport.

Betting is already available on who will land the Green Jersey in April. Here is a look at who sits at the top of the outright market and their chances of success in Georgia.

Rory McIlroy

World number one Rory McIlroy has won four Major Championships in his career. He has been successful in three of the four big events, with the Masters being the only tournament he has yet to win to complete the Grand Slam.

After an excellent 12 months on the PGA Tour, McIlroy has been made the +900 favorite with many of the top betting sites that have opened betting on the 2023 Masters, including STSbet Sports, who are ranked in the top 10 when it comes to sports betting. If you are placing a bet on the tournament, you may be able to pick up a welcome bonus for signing up for an account with some of these leading sportsbooks.

In 2022, McIlroy produced his best result at Augusta, as he finished second behind Scottie Scheffler. He recorded an impressive 64 on the final day which helped him shoot up the leaderboard. With seven top-10 finishes in the event now, he has shown he plays the golf course very well. If he continues in the same vein of form in spring, he may be the man they all have to beat.

Jon Rahm

At +1000 in the outright betting, Jon Rahm is second best in the early market for the Masters in 2023. The Spaniard won the US Open in 2021, and that is unlikely to be his last success in the Major Championships.

Rahm is a 16-time winner in pro events, with victories in 2022 coming in the Mexico Open (PGA Tour) and DP World Tour Championship (European Tour). By his high standards, he will be disappointed not to finish in the top 10 at either of the four Majors in 2022.

The 31-year-old’s game is perfectly suited to the tests of Augusta. He showed that between 2018 and 2021, as he was in the top 10 at all four of those tournaments, with his best results coming in 2018 when he was fourth.

Cameron Smith

Open Champion Cameron Smith has gone close to winning the Masters in each of the last three years. In 2020 he finished in a tie for second place in the event won by Dustin Johnson. A year later, he was once again at the top end of the leaderboard in 10th place, while back in April, he finished in a tie for third.

Smith was also the winner of the Players Championship and the Australian PGA Championship in 2022. He showed across the season that he was a contender for all the big events in the sport.

Only one Australian in history has won the Masters, and that was Adam Scott in 2013 when he prevailed in a playoff, beating Argentina’s Angel Cabrera. If Smith, who is +1000 in the betting, can add his name to the roll of honor at Augusta, it would be a huge result for Australian golf.

Scottie Scheffler

No golfer has defended their crown in the Masters since Tiger Woods in 2002. Scottie Scheffler will be hoping to end that wait for a repeat winner when he tees off in Georgia. The American is +1200 in the outright betting.

Scheffler prevailed by three shots in 2022, with rounds of 69-67-71-71. He had a three-shot lead going into the final day and he held his nerve well to win the first Major Championship of his career.

The former world number one was the winner of four events on the PGA Tour between February and April in 2022. He also finished in a tie for second place in the US Open behind Matt Fitzpatrick. If he can return to that kind of form, he should be a big player once again.

The 2023 Masters takes place between April 6-9. It will be the 87th edition of the Grand Slam event.
