French Open 2024 Betting Preview
The 2024 French Open is underway, with some great action in Paris. Since this is the only Grand Slam tournament played on clay, it’s a unique event which produces two weeks worth of terrific tennis at Roland-Garros.
Odds have obviously continued to adjust with the results, and here’s where things are standing through the conclusion of Monday/in-progress Tuesday play..
Djokovic Has Survived
It’s not been easy thus far, but the top-seed Novak Djokovic has done his part in Paris. Battling both an injured knee and some tough competition, the defending champ (and three-time winner here) is continuing his run.
Djokovic has played until 3 AM local time, then the Serb had to survive a grueling five-setter against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo.
Djokovic, down two sets to one in that match, played through the aforementioned knee injury to make the quarterfinals. He underwent an MRI on that knee.
Norway’s Casper Ruud, seeded seventh, is awaiting Djokovic in Wednesday’s quarters. Ruud dismissed No. 12 (American) Taylor Fritz in four sets to advance.
Djokovic has now reached the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam event a record 59 times.
Quarters Underway
As of this (Tuesday) writing, men’s No. 2 seed Jannik Sinner of Italy was leading his quarterfinal match against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov. Later in the day, No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) opposes Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, seeded ninth.
Swiatek is Rolling
Poland’s Iga Swiatek has continued to own the clay. The two-time defending champion (she also won in 2020) made this season’s French Open semifinals by blitzing No. 5 seed Marketa Vondrousova (Czechia), 6-0, 6-2.
Awaiting the top seed is No. 3 Coco Gauff, that after the American rallied to beat No. 8 Ons Jabeur (Tunisia). Swiatek has won 10 of the 11 matches against Gauff, including the title match here in 2022. She brings a 19-match win streak (overall) into this meeting.
It’s Death, Taxes and Iga
Iga Swiatek of Poland is steamrolling her way to a third consecutive women’s title in Paris and, according to French Open odds, is the prohibitive 4-11 (-275) favorite to finish it.
Aryna Sabalenka, No. 2 seed who plays her quarterfinal match Wednesday, is second choice at 15-4 (+375). Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybinka, No. 4 seed (also playing Wednesday), is at 13-2 (+650), while Coco Gauff, who has to find a way to get past Swiatek, is a 14-1 (+1400) proposition in Paris.
Looking ahead to next month in London, Sabalenka is the tepid 3-1 (+300) favorite, as per Wimbledon odds. Swiatek is at 33-10 (+330).
