James DeGale (20-1, 14 KOs)
DeGale comes into this bout rated 2nd in the world at 168 pounds by the IBF. He is looking to win his first world title and based on the boxing odds he should have a decent chance. DeGale won the 2008 Olympic gold medal and has been on a consistent rise in the rankings. Now he gets his title shot against Dirrell. “Finally it’s here,” said DeGale, “Andre Dirrell is a very good opponent. He’s a tall tricky southpaw, like me, and while a lot of people say our styles will clash – I think they’ll gel. We’re both young, hungry and ambitious so it’s going to be a hard fight, but one that I’m very confident of winning.”

DeGale has lost just once in his career, to George Groves in 2011. He has won 10 straight fights since that loss but none of the opponents were any good. DeGale is taking a big step up in competition for this fight against a more experienced and more talented Dirrell. DeGale believes he is much better prepared to win a title than he used to be. “I’m more of a pro now. Do you remember my first professional fight? I got booed – a bit embarrassing and a bit stupid. It was a little bit mad.. But look who has been on top now. Believe it or not, I do get a lot of love on the streets,” said DeGale, “I think once I win this fight against Andre Dirrell I will get a lot more respect.”
Andre Dirrell (24-1, 16 KOs)
Dirrell’s only loss came in 2009 as he dropped a split decision to Carl Froch. He has won six fights since that time. The IBF title had been held by Froch but Froch decided against a mandatory title defense against DeGale so Dirrell gets a title shot. Dirrell is ranked 2nd at super middleweight by IBF. He won an Olympic bronze medal in 2004. If Dirrell is able to win this fight against DeGale he will join his brother Anthony as a champion as Anthony is the WBC title holder at 168 pounds.
