Jordan Spieth Still Great Value to Win Open Championship 2017, Dustin Johnson 33-1 Odds
Jordan Spieth sat atop the leaderboard after Thursday’s Round One play. Originally a co-favorite with Dustin Johnson at 13/1 odds, that price has been slashed in half. But at 4/1, Spieth still carried tremendous value.
Spieth and two other Americans, Brooks Koepka and Matt Kuchar, led the pack. England’s Paul Casey was 4th on the leaderboard and came in at 33/1 odds to win heading into Friday’s round of play.
"I'm loving being back in England," Casey, now an Arizona resident, said. "The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale may be my favourite links course of any on the rotation. It's so fair, so beautifully designed, bunkering perfect, conditions great. Yeah, so many cool things about it, just the whole week so far has been perfect.
"I've always loved this week because my birthday has been on or around it. I love going to work on my birthday -- I genuinely do. It's just cool. What can I say, walking down 18 is a great experience. And apparently life begins at 40, so maybe it's a good omen for me."
"I thought today's round was extremely important, as they all are," Spieth said, atop the leaderboard at a major for the first time since last year's Masters. "But given the forecast coming in, I thought you really needed to be in the red today. You can certainly make up ground in a round tomorrow, and we'll see it happen. But being able to kind of play with shots, or play a little more conservative because you don't try to do too much on a day like tomorrow, that's nice and very helpful."
