Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir will look to regain the belt against the newly crowned Junior Dos Santos, headlining UFC 146’s main card Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Dos Santos won the title his last time out, knocking Cain Velasquez out with a fury of punches just over a minute into the fight. Having won nine consecutive bouts, Dos Santos is atop his class right now, with his knockout power feared by all—of those nine victories, six have come via KO. In his first chance at defending his belt, he is heavily favored against Frank Mir, who at 32 is four years older than his opponent, having first won the UFC heavyweight crown back in 2004. Mir is on a three-fight winning streak, all against top opponents, including the 2011 submission of the year in his last time out against Minotauro Nogueira. Although he may not be quick enough to avoid Dos Santos’ punches, he deserves the action here as such a heavy underdog who has the potential to end the fight early with either a submission or knockout.
Dos Santos had already established himself as elite, but firmly set himself as the best in his division with his quick slaughtering of Velasquez back in November. At 6-foot-4 he features a traditional boxing style that makes his striking the dominant portion of his attack. Indeed, this heavyweight enjoys fighting on his feet, where 75% of his successful attacks come from. The good news for him is in addition to being a phenomenal striker he is a strong defender, avoiding 85% of incoming takedowns, something that could be big against Mir. But with such short odds, play against.
Mir is less consistently dominant than Dos Santos, but is coming off three impressive wins against Nogueira, Roy Nelson, and Mirko Filipovic. As a submission artist, those make up nine of his career wins, although he has also secured four by knockout. His best chance in this matchup is making Dos Santos feel uncomfortable by taking him off his feet, as Mir is more comfortable fighting on the ground. If he can do that, an early submission is certainly a possibility.
