LAS VEGAS (Associated Press) — Huge crowds and high rollers in Las Vegas for the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight helped Nevada casinos make more than $1 billion off gamblers in May.

It was the first time casinos have hit that total in more than a year.

Nevada Gaming Control Board statistics released Friday show a 3.3 percent year-over-year increase in May. The bump came despite the loss of a Strip casino at the beginning of the month, when the Riviera Hotel and Casino shut down.

Gamblers wagered $12.5 billion on table games, slots and sports bets in May.

The fight also helped boost a category of sports gambling known as “other” to a record total of $81.2 million. That category excludes baseball, basketball, football and horse racing.

Football is king in Texas. We won't pretend to suggest another sport reigns superior despite every major league having one or more teams in the Lone Star State. San Antonio may be a rare exception to the rule....and there's a new sheriff in town to give the Spurs a run for their money.
