GEICO 500 Handicapping Notes
Picking a winner in restrictor plate races is difficult as wrecks are simply a given. There will be many top drivers who will be taken out of this race due to crashes. That means that almost anyone in the field of 43 drivers could legitimately win this race. Look what happened last year in restrictor plate races where Aric Almirola and AJ Allmendinger won to get into the Chase. This year it might be a driver like David Gilliland, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Casey Mears who surprises and wins on Sunday. Last season at Talladega it was Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski winning as top contenders but two years ago it was Jamie McMurray and David Ragan winning at big odds.
Restrictor plate racing in the past two years has been really good to Joe Gibbs Racing so Hamlin, Kenseth, Edwards and Ragan could be in the mix to get the win. The Hendrick cars were solid at Daytona so it is possible that one of them could win on Sunday. Jeff Gordon has won six times at Talladega but not since 2008 and Jimmie Johnson has two wins there but not since 2011.
