“History? I don't know,” said Azarenka, the Australian Open champ of her past play against Williams. “I lost to her most of the times. But, you know, I think we played once here only. I don't remember. . . . I don’t really like to look back in history because every time you step on the court it's a new story. You kind of write your own history every time.”
Azarenka is a very small underdog in this matchup, paying only around US$6 on a US$4 bet should she win.
“She’s definitely a very tough opponent,” Azarenka said. “She’s a great champion. Obviously she’s a great fighter. She never gives up. You always see that, no matter what the score is, she will go for her shots. She has a huge serve, which we all know. Every player that played against her felt that. It’s definitely an asset.
“We had good matches. We had bad matches. We'll see. The situation will not be the same.”
Serena, it should be noted, has won fewer matches in 2012 than any of the other three semifinalists.
“Serena is just great champion. When she’s on fire, I really don’t want her on my part of the draw. That’s for sure,” said the third-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska. “I think she’s still in shape. She’s still looking good on court. She’s playing still a good tennis, running like (she’s) 18 years old.”
