Tiger Woods 2009 US Open odds would pay $500 for every $100 bet.  This is the biggest potential payout for Tiger Woods in recent memory.  Woods had opened as a 2/1 favorite.

Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune summed up Tiger's performance like this:

Tiger Woods was trapped in a dungeon. His day, which began at 7:26 a.m. on the seventh green, was marked by overcast skies, soggy greens and mud balls.

His 4-over 74 leaves him fighting history. He never has won a major with a round of 4 over par -- or even 3 over, for that matter.

PGA officials are not allowing players to lift, clean and place balls in the fairways.

"If we keep it down, it is what it is. It's potluck," Woods said.

The crux of Woods' troubles came when he three-putted the 15th green for double bogey. He marked the occasion with a choice four-letter word.

Tiger Woods first round finish is "historically bad", Greenstein pointed out.

It equaled his second-worst four-hole stretch to finish a round in his 230 professional starts on the PGA Tour. The only rougher ending came during the fourth round of the 2007 Arnold Palmer Invitational, which he finished par- bogey-double-triple for a six-over slide.

"The way I feel right now, I don't want to go back out there," Woods said. "I'd probably be a few clubs light."

Still, Tiger has a knack for coming back strong in the final round.

At 5/1 odds, it's a rarity and tempting
