UFC Fight Night 89: MacDonald vs. Thompson is the company's first in Ottawa, the capital of Canada, and the card is filled with Canadian talent. The main event comes from the welterweight division as former challenger Rory MacDonald takes on Stephen Thompson, who has emerged in his own right. Also, Valerie Letourneau faces Joanne Calderwood in the UFC's first women's flyweight match at 125 pounds.

MacDonald (18-3), who is from British Columbia, but fights out of Montreal, has been off since losing to champion Robbie Lawler last July in 2015's Fight of the Year; two of his losses have now come against Lawler. Thompson (13-1) shocked the world with a TKO win over former champion Johny Hendricks in February, stunning Hendricks with an array of strikes. MacDonald is also a very good striker, but Thompson has won titles in kickboxing (he is 57-0 as a kickboxer) and is a highly-decorated karate artist. MacDonald would do well to get this to the mat, where he can use his jiu-jitsu. The winner might get a title shot later this year.
