Serena Williams is the favorite to win the Bank of the West Classic that begins on Monday on the campus of Stanford University. The field for the event resembles what is seen in a Grand Slam as joining Serena in the tournament are Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova, Agnieska Radwanska, Angelique Kerber, Ana Ivanovic, Dominika Cibulkova, Sara Errani, Carla Suarez-Navarro, Sam Stosur and Andrea Petkovic. That means five of the world’s top ten ranked players and more than half of the world’s top twenty are in the field.
Here is a look at the Bank of the West Classic and tennis predictions.
Serena Williams
The favorite to win this event will be world #1 Serena Williams. She has won this event in two of the past three years. She will be looking to win her 61st career WTA title.
Other Challengers
The list of challengers to Serena in this tournament is a long one. It starts with World No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska and also includes defending Bank of the West Classic champion Dominika Cibulkova who is ranked 12th. Also in the field are World No. 6 and 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova along with ninth-ranked Angelique Kerber. Other challengers include No. 11 Ana Ivanovic, No. 14 Sara Errani, No. 15 Carla Suarez-Navarro, No. 17 Samantha Stosur, No. 19 Sabine Lisicki and No. 20 Andrea Petkovic.
Tennis Notes
This tournament started in 1971 in San Francisco and then moved to Oakland in 1979. It moved to Stanford University at the Taube Family Tennis Center in 1997. Bank of the West has been the title sponsor since 1992. This is the first event of the Emirates Airline US Open Series which leads up to the US Open. Dominika Cibulkova won this event last year while Serena Williams won it in 2011 and in 2012. Victoria Azarenka took the title in 2010.
The other tournament for the women during the week of July 28th-August 3rd is the Citi Open where world No. 7 Eugenie Bouchard is expected to be the top seed.
Tennis Predictions
Serena will be overpriced but she has done really well at the Bank of the West Classic and she should win. A couple of longshots worth a look are Dominika Cibulkova and Andrea Petkovic.
