An assassin stands at the driver seat of Vangelis Zambounis with machine gun

Notorious mobster Vangelis Zambounis was killed by two assassins who peppered him with 96 rounds as he sat in his BMW outside a gas station in Athens early morning Sunday.  A leaked video shows the brazen incident.

In that video, Zambounis can be seen standing beside the gas pumps.  He then enters his vehicle and closes the door.  Moments later an individual rushes up to the driver's side and begins firing rounds directly into the car.

Reports suggest the windows of the BMW were bulletproof.  The gas station where the murder occurred is believed to have been owned by Zambouis.

Two police officers, said to be the first responders to the incident, were arrested after leaking CCTV footage of the hit.  They are also accused of releasing photos of the dead Zambounis.

The two assassins, who ambushed Vangelis Zambounis outside a gasoline station, remain at large.

The 44-year-old mobster is said to have been tied to tobacco smuggling, protection rackets and local narcotic distribution, while the suspect behind a series of murders of rival gangsters.

Today the Green Mafia is mostly known for engaging in businesses such as human smuggling, arms trafficking, drug trafficking and illicit trade in cigarettes, alcohol and fuel.

Gambling has always been a staple of Greek organised crime, especially in the US, in particular the Philadelphia area.
