2023 NCAA Tournament Betting Notes, Predictions

  1. These lines could change up until game time. Here’s the link for the most up-to-date lines: https://www.betonline.ag/sportsbook/basketball/ncaa.
  2. There will be no opening lines for Friday games including tonight’s teams. However, Texas A&M CC/Alabama and Pittsburgh/Iowa State are now up.
  3. There were only two lower seeds, West Virginia and Utah State, favored in their first round matchup. Add Auburn to that mix.
  4. There were two pick’ems when the lines opened. There are none now.
  5. The largest current opening spread was Kansas-21½. It is now Alabama -24½.
  6. Highest total was and is still Grand Canyon vs Gonzaga at 155½. However, Utah State vs Missouri is now also -155½.
  7. Lowest total is still Northern Kentucky vs Houston at 122.
  8. Three games have had no movement in either line or total. (Houston game, Gonzaga game, and Kansas State game)
  9. I’m a massive numbers and stat nerd so here are some stats from the opening lines:
    1. Seven games the spread moved in favor of the favorite, 8 games the spread moved in favor of the underdog, 13 spreads are unchanged.

                                                               i.      The largest movement for the favorites:

  1. Louisiana vs Tennessee went from Tennessee -10 to -11½
  2. Kennesaw State vs Xavier went from Xavier -11 to -12½.

                                                             ii.      The largest movement for the underdog:

  1. Illinois vs Arkansas went from Illinois +3½ to +2.

                                                           iii.      15 totals went up, nine totals went down, and six stayed the same.

  1. The largest movements towards the over:
    1. Colgate vs Texas went from 146 to 150
    2. FAU vs Memphis went from 149½ to 153
  2. The largest movement towards the under:
    1. West Virginia vs Maryland went from 140 to 137½.
