The early payout odds for Sierra Leone to win this year's Kentucky Derby were coming in at 6-1 or a payout of $600 for every $100 bet, keeping in mind that these odds are subject to change, especially the week, hours and even minutes leading up to the big race. Before You bet on Sierra Leone
Winner of the Risen Star Stakes, Sierra Leone had previously finished 2nd at the Remsen, his only other stake race.
While no winner of the Risen Star Stakes has ever gone on to win the Kentucky Derby, two runners who have run in the event have gone on to win the Run for the Roses.
He's trained by Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. Despite his success, Asmussen has yet to win a Kentucky Derby. He's 0-16 having had 24 starters. Epicenter came the closes in 2022 with a 2nd place finish.
Could this finally be Asmussen's year?
“He’s a wonderful horse,” Asmussen said of Sierra Leone. “I’m very fortunate to have him for the 3-year-old series here (at Fair Grounds). He has run extremely well in the three previous (Derby preps). Hopefully we can get back to the winner’s circle with him on Saturday. Obviously, we like his chances.”
