The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers have a 2022 regular season win total set at 8.5, and the OVER is favored.

This is a team that has gone to seven bowl games in the last eight years.  Not bad!

“We’re very excited at WKU this year.” head coach Tyson Helton said. “Think we’ve got a really good football team. A great group of men, guys that love to compete. We are really looking forward to a competitive schedule this year, as you know, we played in the championship game last year and winning championships is really important. So if we can stay healthy, play well, and do what we need to do. We’d like to get back there."

The Hilltoppers will enter 2022 having lost some of their key players from last season's 8-5 team.

Starting quarterback Bailey Zappe and top receiver Jerreth Sterns are not returning.

“The biggest thing is you’ve got to re-evaluate your team every year and put your best 11 out on the field, offensively and defensively.” Helton said. “You play to your strengths and I think we’ve got a good offense coming back this year. I have really liked our quarterback room. We’re gonna have a quarterback battle through fall camp, and I’m gonna wait to name a quarterback. But I am really excited about the talent that’s in that room, and we’ve got really good skill players.”

  • There is still talent:  Michael Mathison made 56 catches at Akron, Daewood Davis averaged close to 18 yards per catch and eighth scores, and Malachi Corley had 73 catches for 691 yards and seven scores and was the leading returning receiver.
  • Dalvin Smith is also back, having made five touchdown catches as a freshman.
  • Tight ends Joey Bejan and Joshua Simon will also be returning.
  • The Hilltoppers had one of the best offensive lines in the country last season, ranking 14th in the nation and will retain most of its lineman heading into 2022.
  • Here's the good news: WKU could actually win all of its games on this year's schedule.  Take the OVER.
