Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje in a lightweight battle is getting the headlines, but there are some other bouts worthy of attention as well.
Here is a look at UFC 291, with a quick betting preview of the top bouts on the card.
Rematch is Huge
It’s been five years since Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje first met in the Octagon, and that’s created plenty of hype and anticipation ahead of this fight. As two of the best lightweight fighters in UFC history, it’s the winner getting another shot at the title.
Poirier is the -150 betting favorite, according to UFC 291 odds, Expect a great but, since that’s usually what these two fighters tend to deliver.
It’s going to be a battle that lasts the (five-round) distance, with some big blows landed.
Poirier as the fave is the better option in this lightweight showdown.
Blachowicz vs. Pereira
Now, Alex Pereira is going to the light-heavyweight division, with his first opponent in that weight a former champion in Jan Blachowicz. odds couldn’t be much tighter here, Pereira at -110, Blachowicz as the slight choice at -120.
Blachowicz lost his last (title) fight to Magomed Ankalaev in this weight class. He’s a proven fighter in the light-heavyweight division, but he might be a bit undersized here.
Pereira lost his last bout. It was clear that trying to get down to 185 pounds was just too much of a task. Now, closer to his usual weight and thus being more physical in this battle.
Pereira hasn’t fought at this weight before, but not an issue. Take him at -110.
Ferguson vs. Green
Longtime UFC fans are going to love a pairing near the end of the night, Tony Ferguson taking on Bobby Green. It’s another lightweight tussle. These two fighters have had long UFC careers, 46 UFC bouts and nearly 80 total fights between them.
Ferguson was once the biggest star among the lightweights. However, wrong results happened in a hurry. He’s lost five bouts in a row, thus a big underdog (+300) here.
Green is another fighter looking to rebound, and has actually been sharp in some recent fights. He will be out to end this fight early.
He is a huge favorite at -400 Saturday night, and that is the correct way to go with this fight.
Some Other Wagers
The final three fights in Salt Lake City are going to generate the bulk of the interest, but there are other great bouts on the card as well. It may be wise to examine bets during the prelims.
Kevin Holland and Stephen Thompson, both at -150 in their respective bouts, are two fighters worthy of consideration.
There are plenty of prop wagers available on the card, as per UFC odds.
Note that all odds listed are as of Wednesday late morning, and subject to change.
