Fun Facts
- Only three horses ran in the 1892 and 1905 Kentucky Derby races. 23 ran in 1974 and prior to that, 13 ran in 1973. It wasn't until 1975 that the Kentucky Derby field was set at 20. The smaller field allowed for more wins from the No. 1 post position. The bigger field makes it much harder to win from the No. 1 post position.
- Derma Sotogake had relatively shot odds in this year's Kentucky Derby but no horse has won from the No. 17 spot and no winner of the UAB Derby at Meydan has ever won the Kentucky Derby.
- The post position to deliver the most wins? That would be the No. 5 spot. Tapit Trice starts from there in the 2023 Kentucky Derby at 5-1 odds. He's also the other horse trained by Todd Fletcher, whose Forte comes into this race as the favorite.
- Forte is this year's favorite for a reason. Not only has he enjoyed great success coming into the Kentucky Derby, his Florida Derby win provides quite the edge. 24 winners of that race have gone onto win the Kentucky Derby.
