After a thrilling week that saw the return of Tiger Woods and Jon Rahm take over the top spot in the OWGR rankings, the PGA Tour will have a more subdued atmosphere when it heads to Minnesota for this week’s playing of the 3M Open. Sandwiched between higher profile events like last week’s Memorial and the upcoming WGC and PGA Championship, a number of big names have elected to skip this turn in the rotation. The three highest ranked players top the odds board with No. 4 Dustin Johnson the betting favorite followed by Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka.  Bookmaker.eu is offering a generous welcome bonus with a maximum of $1000.

The 3M Open made its debut on the schedule last year with Matthew Wolff claiming victory with a 72-hole TPC Twin Cities course record 263. It took Wolff just four starts to get that maiden victory, he hasn’t won since, though he did finish as runner-up at the Rocket Mortgage Classic earlier this month. The odds suggest a wide open field and unlike last week it might be worthwhile to a look further down the odds board for better value. Odds Analysis

The five highest ranked players in the field take up the top spots on the odds board, which isn’t all that surprising. Johnson opened at +1016 with Fleetwood a little further back at +1547. They are followed by Koepka, Paul Casey and Tony Finau. DJ is the only one of the bunch that has a win this season and we haven’t seen enough from the others to justify throwing down on them.

Koepka is admittedly still bothered by a bum knee that needed surgery a while back and Fleetwood is making his first start since the Tour reboot. Meanwhile, Johnson and Casey both missed the cut at last week’s Memorial. Finau might be the best pick of the bunch. He grabbed a solo eighth last week and his prowess off the tee will give him opportunities to gain strokes.

Wolff is an interesting fellow. He tamed the layout last year matching the 18-hole course record with a third-round 62 and setting the 72-hole mark to win by one swing over Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa. Wolff has competed in every event since the restart missing the cut three times and taking second at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He earned a share of 22nd at the Memorial.

There isn’t a lot of course history to go on since this is just the second Tour visit to TPC Twin Cities. Five other golfers, besides Wolff, who placed in the top-10 last year are back to tackle the course Wyndham Clark grabbed a share of fifth while Lucas Glover, Sam Burns, Brian Harman and Troy Merritt all tied for seventh.

3M Open Preview

In what is a watered-down field compared to last week and pretty much every tournament since the restart, it’s tempting to lean on the favorites for an outright win. At 10/1 the price is right for DJ, but back-to-back 80s last week have me looking elsewhere. Besides, this is the kind of field that can lift a big underdog to the winner’s circle.

Though not a steep price, Harris English has value at +2631. He’s been extremely consistent this season with five top-10 finishes among his nine top-20s. His ability to expertly wield every stick in his bag is something that will certainly come in handy. He missed the cut at the Schwab, his only blemish since well before the shutdown. His last two starts yielded a T17 at the RBC Heritage and a solid T13 at the Memorial.

Wolff wasn’t the only player to tame TPC Twin Cities last year. Lucas Glover joined the 62 Club matching the 18-hole course record to finish tied for seventh. He’s made the cut in all five post-shutdown tournaments with improved putting getting him inside the top-25 four times. It might be a stretch to move all the way to the top of the leaderboard, but stranger things have happened.

Strong putting off the stick of Henrik Norlander last week got him into a tie for sixth at the Memorial. If the expert ball-striker can put it all together he’s a good candidate for the top spot. Long ballers Finau and Jhonattan Vegas have a slight advantage due to the length of the course. It’s going to take a well-rounded game and bogey avoidance, though, to finish on top.

3M Open Pick: Harris English

Top-5 Lock: Tony Finau

Top-10 Lock: Tommy Fleetwood
