The reason for this is that you’re going to be dealing with a number of fan bases for schools that look pretty good entering this new season.

From the NY Times:

Chicago is sometimes called "a city of neighborhoods," and it shows on this map. It may have the most intricate set of loyalties of any city in the country. Those loyalties are split among Notre Dame, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio State and Northwestern, each of which is the leading team in at least one ZIP code. Travel just a bit north of the city, and you're in Wisconsin territory. No wonder you can find bars supporting so many different teams in Chicago.

Notre Dame was coming in at 22-1 odds of winning the National Championship game this season.

Michigan had odds of 12-1 to win the Championship game.

Ohio State had the third shortest odds at 8-1.

Northwestern was favored to win OVER 6.5 regular season games.

Chicago’s home state team Illinois was expected to have a forgettable season.
