Leicester hasn’t officially won the Premier League Championship but punters are already being paid out by bookmakers the likes of BetFred.com, which just paid £40,000 on a future wager made at 2000/1 odds at just £20.

Betfred believe Tottenham can no longer catch Leicester in the title race, according to the Daily Mail.

The Foxes moved seven points clear with six games remaining on Sunday thanks to a win over Southampton over the weekend.

BetFred founder Fred Done said: “Today was a very significant win and Leicester have impressed me all season. I have a number of punters who incredibly backed the Foxes for fivers and tenners at very fancy prices and it will cost me a million pounds.

'”I want those punters to get their dough now. I am delighted because Leicester have been an absolute breath of fresh air this season.'”

The move by Done and company represents quite a shift from previous policies that just a few years ago left Gambling911.com fighting on behalf of a granny who, at the time, BetFred refused to pay.  Ultimately the bookmaker had a change of heart.

Linda Aldred, grandmother to UK Olympic gymnast Sam Oldham, had placed a small wager on her grandson to win an individual medal in Athletics.  BetFred initially refused to pay the £1000 citing that the bronze was awarded to the team as a whole, not Oldham as an individual.

But paying out on bets early is nothing new to Done.  He was the first ever bookmaker to pay out early in 1998 on his beloved Manchester United to win only to have Arsenal walk away with the title.  And in 2012 he paid out early on Man United only for Man City to win the title on goal differences.
