Obermann Questions Silver Stance on Sports Betting Days After FanDuel Deal

Responding to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s new stance that sports betting should be legalized and regulated, ESPN2 sports commentator Keith Obermann suggested there is an underlying reason behind Silver's about-face.

The NBA Commissioner stunned the sports world late Thursday by writing a New York Times opt-ed in support of betting on NBA games and perhaps other professional sports.

He wrote, in part:

“In light of these domestic and global trends, the laws on sports betting should be changed. Congress should adopt a federal framework that allows states to authorize betting on professional sports, subject to strict regulatory requirements and technological safeguards.”

Olbermann was quick to point out that the National Basketball Association had just entered into a sponsorship deal with the daily fantasy sports venture FanDuel.com, a site he claims is “legalized gambling dressed up to look like fantasy sports”.

“Fantasy sports has always been dressed up to look like personal delusions of grandeur,” Olbermann added.
