Scattered thunderstorms could kick in as early as 3 pm EST. Anyone who knows this region of the country this time of year understands that it just takes one strong storm to result in a significant downpour with the potential for a sloppy track. There is a 50 percent chance of rain each of the three hours leading up to the start of the race.
The obvious choice if rain is likely would be the Belmont Stakes favorite Exaggerator. He was already known for having performed successfully on a muddy track before the Triple Crown and enjoyed an impressive victory in the slop at the Preakness Stakes.
We can’t ignore the fact that Cherry Wine finished a strong second at this year’s Preakness Stakes under extremely muddy conditions. He was coming in at 12-1 odds and seeing close to 11 percent of the action.
