Always Dreaming had early odds of near 6-1 to win the 2017 Kentucky Derby, but in a hotly contested field, he is actually among the co-favorites.

Always Dreaming is the winner of the Florida Derby and had won his previous race as well while finishing 2nd in the previous race.

He went through a five-furlong drill in :59.60 with jockey John Velazquez aboard for trainer Todd Pletcher.

“I thought it was a powerful work; exceptional,” Pletcher said. “He's full of himself. It was a good work with a great gallop out. He galloped out past the (track) kitchen (at the half-mile pole).”

Two other horses – Classic Empire and Irish War Cry – were also coming in between 5-1 and 6-1 odds early on.  No horse had shorter odds and it remained to be seen which of the three would ultimately grab hold of the favorite status.  The post position draw was likely to be a factor there.
