Ruler On Ice Wins 2011 Belmont Stakes

Ruler on Ice with 24 to 1 odds wins the 2011 Belmont Stakes with a muddy track after some heavy late afternoon rains.  This was the 143rd Belmont Stakes and the longest track of the Triple Crown.

Favorite Animal Kingdom almost lost jockey John Valesquez at the start of the race.  Preakness Stakes winner Shackleford had the lead early while Animal Kingdom was dead last.  Like with the two previous races, Shackleford led most of the way.

It was a Belmont Stakes shocker.  Stay Thirsty and Brilliant Speed were in 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
