The Best Actress category is one of the most competitive at this year's Oscars, and this is shown in the odds.
Carey Mulligan is favored for her role in Promising Young Woman. The reward is still better than the risk at $12.50 for every $10 bet.
Frances McDormand (Nomadland) will pay out shy of $40 for every $10 bet with a win.
Promising Young Woman has Mulligan portraying a woman who seeks to avenge the death of her best friend at the hands of a rapist. She visits bars, pretending to be drunk, to expose the men who prey on women.
The movie, though a comedy, has left some feeling uncomfortable.
"A couple of journalists that I spoke to said, 'She's a bit crazy, right? She smashes up that guy's car, and she's a bit nuts.' You know, in all of these films where men are enacting revenge, or they're going on a mission for somebody that they love, I've never heard any of those men being referred to as crazy. She's basically doing the same thing, and actually what she's doing is a lot less drastic than a lot of the things that happen in these other films, but she's 'crazy.'"
Nomadland captures Frances McDormand playing a woman embarking on a journey through the American West after losing everything during the recession. The film plays especially well to the current day situation of exiting a global pandemic that brought the world economy - and most folks lives - to a screeching halt.
Andra Day is an option as well for her role in The United States vs. Billie Holliday. Should she win, the payout would be $55 for every $10 bet.
